Artus Quellinus (born August 30, 1609 in Antwerp , † February 23, 1668 in Antwerp) was a Flemish sculptor . In the literature he is usually referred to as Artus Quellinus the Elder .

Life

Artus Quellinus was the son and student of the sculptor Erasmus Quellinus I from the artist family Quellinus , and brother of Erasmus Quellinus II and Hubertus Quellinus . He trained with the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy in Rome. In 1640 he was accepted into the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. After 1648 he was called to Amsterdam to decorate the local town hall, the Paleis op de Dam , with sculptures . In the two gables he put two figure-rich groups who glorified Amsterdam's maritime power. Inside he carried out decorative work, including the relief of Diana and a mourning caryatid . Quellinus moved in the more painterly forms of expression of the Baroque style .

In 1660 he and Gerrit van Uylenburgh put together the works of art for the Dutch gift to Charles II . The Quellinus School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam, which was active until 1924, was named after him.

His cousin Artus Quellinus II was also a sculptor.
