. Erasmus Quellinus II , Erasmus Quellinus the Younger (* 19th November 1607 in Antwerp , † 7. November 1678 ) was a Flemish painter, pupil of Rubens , and engraver from Antwerp family of artists Quellinus .

Life

Quellinus was the son of the sculptor Erasmus Quellinus I and his wife Elisabeth van Uden and the brother of Artus Quellinus I and Hubertus Quellinus (* 1605). First he received training in languages and sciences, which he completed as a "Magister of Philosophy" (Magister Artium). In 1633 he became master of the Antwerp Guild of Luke . From 1634 he worked with Peter Paul Rubens , after whose death he became the official city painter of Antwerp. He converted Rubens' decidedly baroque conception of art into painting with a more classical primer. From 1636 to 1638 he made decorations in the "Torre de la Parada", a royal hunting lodge near Madrid. This reorientation can be well documented in one of his most important furnishing projects , that of the Paleis op de Dam in Amsterdam, which he furnished with his brother Artus Quellinus I around 1656.

Quellinus worked for the Thurn und Taxis company as well as for the cities of Amsterdam and Ghent. He and also worked together with others (mostly flower painters) or his son Jan Erasmus Quellinus . His son was also a well-known figure among the baroque painters of the Spanish Netherlands. He continued his father's turn towards a more classical art movement in Flanders into the 18th century. Jacob Denys and Wallerant Vaillant were his students.

The
Quellinus family was married twice:

  • In 1634 he married Catherine (or Katharina) de Hemelaer († 1662, whose sister was married to the flower painter Jan Philip van Thielen [1618–1667])
    • Jan Erasmus Quellinus
  • On November 19, 1663, he married Francisca (or Françoise) de Fren († 1696, a daughter of Council Secretary André de Fren and sister-in-law of the painter David Teniers II. )
