Abraham Zapruder (born May 15, 1905 in Kovel , Ukraine , † August 30, 1970 in Dallas , Texas ) was an amateur filmmaker who happened to film the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963 while watching the presidential reception in Texas .

Life

Zapruder's camera

Zapruder, who owned a women's clothing company, used what was then a very advanced 414-PD- Bell & Howell -Zoomatic-Director-Series film camera from 1962, equipped with a Kodak Kodachrome II safety film .

Journalist and intelligence officer Forrest Sorrels showed up at Zapruder's office within an hour of the attack . The film went to the television station WFAA . The film itself could not be seen on the screen, as WFAA did not have the opportunity to develop the 8 mm film, but Zapruder himself was seen in an interview within two hours.

After Kodak had developed what is now known as the Zapruder film , two copies of the film went to the secret service and one to Zapruder. He sold it with full rights for 150,000 US dollars to the Life Magazine ; Part of the contract was that the actual effect of the shot on Kennedy's head could not be shown ( Fig. 313). Zapruder donated the first installment of $ 25,000 to the widow of murdered police officer JD Tippit .

Abraham Zapruder was a member of the Freemasonry Association and was also involved with the Shriners for free medical care for children. He died of stomach cancer on August 30, 1970 .

Zapruder in popular culture

In the 2013 feature film Parkland , Paul Giamatti took on the role of Zapruder in the drama that depicts the events following the Kennedy's assassination.

Bob Dylan: Murder Most Foul (2020): "Zapruder's film I seen night before / Seen it thirty-three times, maybe more / It's vile and deceitful, it's cruel and it's mean / Ugliest thing that you ever have seen / ... “" (Verse 3, ll. 27 ff.)
