Born in Obermichelbach near Fürth, Will studied theology, philosophy, philology and history at the University of Altdorf from 1744 . He spent his last year of study in Halle and Leipzig . In 1748 he was back in Altdorf, where he completed his habilitation in philosophy . In the following years he worked as a private lecturer. From 1755 he was a full professor at the University of Altdorf, holding the positions of rector and dean several times. In 1756 he founded the Altdorfische Deutsche Gesellschaft. He was one of the outstanding professors at the Altorfina in the latter part of the 18th century and worked tirelessly to promote “his” university. He wrote a large number of works, especially on the history of Nuremberg and its surroundings, which are still valid today. His history of the city and the University of Altdorf are frequently cited standard works. He also created a dictionary of the Nuremberg dialect ( Idiotikon ), which, however, was not published.

He left a library of around 15,000 volumes to the city of Nuremberg, which forms a special collection of the city library .
