Abbot Frobenius Forster

Frobenius Forster OSB (actually Johann Michael ; born August 30, 1709 in Königsfeld an der Ilm ; † October 1, 1791 in the St. Emmeram Monastery / Regensburg ) was abbot of the St. Emmeram Monastery from 1762 to 1791 and also a well-known Roman- Catholic philosopher , historian and educator.

From 1744 to 1747 he worked as a professor of philosophy at the University of Salzburg . Similar to his friars Anselm Desing or Andreas Gordon , Forster was critical of the baroque scholasticism , as it had less and less to oppose the theories of the Enlightenment . At the same time, however, they used their universalistic claim to deal with the totality of knowledge. During his time as prince abbot of the St. Emmeram monastery, the monastery developed into a leading humanities and natural science center in the German cultural area. As a scholar, he made a name for himself with a comprehensive publication of the works of Alkuin .

From 1759 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1778 he was elected an honorary member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
