Celestine II. Step-back chair
Celestine II. Steiglehner OSB (born August 17, 1738 in Sündersbühl near Nuremberg as Georg Christoph Ferdinand ; † February 21, 1819 in Regensburg ) was the last prince abbot of St. Emmeram in Regensburg from 1791 to 1802.
The Benedictine monk, who worked as a natural scientist and composer, was professor of physics, astronomy and mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt from 1781 to 1791 . On December 1, 1791 he was elected Prince Abbot of St. Emmeram. Despite the politically uneasy situation, the abbot successfully promoted education and science, so he carried out a fundamental reform of the elementary school. In December 1802 the prince abbey was ceded to the Imperial Arch Chancellor Karl Theodor von Dalberg . In 1810 the monastery was ceded to Bavaria and the abbey was dissolved, which lasted until 1813. The monastery itself came into the possession of the Thurn und Taxis family . In 1790 Steiglehner was appointed a full member of the Philosophical Class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
