Regina Resnik

Regina Resnik (born August 30, 1922 in New York City ; † August 8, 2013 there ) was an American opera singer ( soprano , mezzo-soprano and alto ).

Life

Coming from a Russian-Jewish family, Regina Resnik studied at Hunter College until 1942 and made her debut at the New York Opera Company as Lady Macbeth and a little later at the New York City Opera as Santuzza . In 1944 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, initially as a soprano. In 1953 she also sang a Wagner soprano role , Sieglinde in Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival under Clemens Krauss . From 1956 she appeared in alto and mezzo-soprano roles on the advice of her singing teacher Giuseppe Danise.

Until the 1970s she was internationally the first choice for mezzo-soprano roles such as Carmen , Klytämnestra (legendary recording with Birgit Nilsson , conducted by Georg Solti ), Amneris , Miss Quickly and many others.

In 1971 she began directing operas, and since 1983 she has produced documentary programs and music programs on Jewish topics for television and radio.

Regina Resnik's voice was characterized by a special expressiveness and energy and possessed a "steel" that was in no way inferior to that of her Scandinavian colleagues Astrid Varnay or Birgit Nilsson .

She was married to the Lithuanian-Jewish painter and sculptor Arbit Blatas (1908–1999) in her second marriage since 1975. Her first marriage to attorney Harry Davis has a son. She died at the age of 90 on August 8, 2013 in New York.
