The Palazzo Reale in Naples was a residence of the Bourbon-Sicilian royal family until 1861 and a residence of the House of Savoy until 1946 . Other important royal residences in and around Naples were the Palace of Capodimonte , the Palace of Caserta and the Palace of Portici .

The Palazzo Reale is located in the old town between the Piazza del Plebiscito and the port. Today it is a state museum (Museo di Palazzo Reale) , which also includes the monumental grand staircase, the throne room and the small court theater. Particularly worth seeing is the Appartamento storico , which consists of more than 30 halls , in the interior of which there are portraits of the royal family as well as paintings by Belisario Corenzio , Bartolomeo Schedoni , Guercino , Mattia Preti , Francesco De Mura and other Neapolitan artists.

In the east wing of the palace is the National Library of Naples , in the north the famous Teatro San Carlo and the Church of San Ferdinando border the Palazzo.

The Spanish viceroy Pedro Álvarez de Toledo had a palace built at the port in the first half of the 16th century. The architect Domenico Fontana received the order for a new building around 1600, which was largely completed by 1620. In 1735 the palace became the royal residence when the Kingdom of Naples gained its independence under Charles VII . In the following decades various expansion and renovation works were carried out. After a fire, the palazzo was renovated and expanded again between 1838 and 1858. In 1888 King Umberto I had statues of important monarchs who had ruled over the Kingdom of Naples erected at the palace: Roger II , Frederick II , Charles I , Alfonso V , Charles V , Charles VII , Joachim Murat and Viktor Emanuel II. Between 1922 and 1925, the National Library was moved from the Archaeological Museum to the Palazzo Reale.

During the Second World War, the palazzo was badly damaged, which necessitated extensive reconstruction and restoration work.
