Hans Osel (born August 30, 1907 in Pasing , † December 28, 1996 in Munich ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Hans Osel was born as the son of the Reichstag member Heinrich Osel on August 30, 1907 in the then independent town of Pasing. After the murder of his father, the son's career changed fundamentally. He left high school and attended the wood carving school in Munich from 1921 to 1925. This was followed by ten semesters of study at the State School for Applied Arts from 1926 to 1930 . Early competition successes, including two first prizes for figural compositions in the Harnack House in Berlin, arose. 1931 to 1938 followed 13 semesters at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Professor Karl Killer . Osel won many academy competitions and was awarded Munich and international scholarships. In 1937 he opened his own studio in Munich's Tizianstrasse, which was destroyed in 1943 during World War II. 30 sculptures, around 800 hand drawings and all sculpting utensils burned while Osel was in Russia. In 1939 he was called up for military service and did not return home until June 16, 1945 . Numerous works by Osel are in public space. He made his work in stone as well as in bronze, wood and glass. In addition to his fountain figures, Osel mainly worked for churches and monasteries in Bavaria and Hesse. His artistic work was honored with three state purchases. In 1932, Osel passed the professional ski instructor exam. In the post-war period he founded a ski school in cooperation with a Munich sports store in 1948 , which under his direction developed into the largest in Europe and was later taken over by Sportscheck . Osel was chairman of the German Ski Instructor Association for 23 years , later its honorary president.

On December 28, 1996, Hans Osel died in his house in Munich-Pasing, and on January 8, 1997 he was buried in the Pasing cemetery .
