William Ernest "Erny / Ernie" Pinckert (born May 1, 1907 in Medford , Wisconsin , † August 30, 1977 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American American football player. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins .
youth
Erny Pinckert was born into a family from Saxony-Anhalt in Medford. He had nine siblings. After his family moved, he attended high school in San Bernardino , California , where he played fullback American football on the school team. In 1926, he was named Best California High School Football Player.
Player career
college
After graduating from high school, Erny Pinckert studied at the University of Southern California . For their football team, the USC Trojans , he played as a halfback . For his athletic achievements, he received awards from his college from 1929 to 1931. In 1930 and 1931 the election to All-American followed . In 1930 he was able to move into the Rose Bowl with his team for the first time . Opponent was the team from the University of Pittsburgh , which had to admit defeat to the Trojans with 47:14. Pinckert managed a touchdown in this game . Two years later he drew national attention again. He played as blocking back with his team again in the Rose Bowl, this time against the team from Tulane University . With two touchdowns, he made a decisive contribution to the 21:12 victory of his team and was named Most Valuable Player after the game .
NFL
In 1932, Pinckert joined the Boston Braves . The team was renamed Redskins the following year. Before the 1937 season, the Redskins moved to Washington, DC . This season, Ray Flaherty took over the position of head coach for the team. In addition, Sammy Baugh, one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, was tied to the team. The Redskins won eight of eleven games in this game round in the regular season , which brought them into the NFL championship game . The opponents in this game were the Chicago Bears , supervised by George Halas , who had to leave the field with a 28:21 defeat. In 1940 the Bears retaliated for this defeat in the final. The Redskins had again qualified for the final with nine wins from eleven games and this time they were able to defeat their opponent 73-0. After this defeat, Pinckert ended his professional career.
After the career
Erny Pinckert worked in the fashion industry after his career in California . He was married and had three children. Ernest Pinckert is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City , California.
Honors
Erny Pinckert was elected twice to the Pro Bowl and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, and the USC Athletic Hall of Fame.
