Adam Krolczyk (born February 17, 1826 in Niedenau in the Neidenburg district , † August 30, 1872 in Hong Kong ) was a German Evangelical missionary in China.

Live and act

The son of a farmer attended grammar school in Rastenburg in 1845 , studied Protestant theology at the University of Königsberg in 1849 and moved to the seminary in Wittenberg in 1851 . After training as a theologian, he became assistant preacher at the Bäslack church in 1852 and pastor in Kurken in 1853 . On April 10, 1861, he went to China as a missionary for the Rhenish Mission Society in Barmen.

Krolczyk, who had already published before his arrival in China, continued this in his missionary work in China. His remarks were printed in various magazines, drawing the attention of his compatriots to Mission China. The Königsberger Missionsblatt in particular received a number of very valuable articles on China from Krolczyk's hand. He also wrote several scientific papers in English and Chinese, gave lectures to educated circles and eagerly participated in a new Chinese translation of the Bible. He traveled through the country with his assistants. He healed the sick, preached and disputed.

He was particularly interested in the ancient Chinese mountain people, the Miautz , who had survived in the mountains of southern China for centuries almost independently of Chinese rule. Krolczyk went to great lengths to establish intercourse with them. He entered their area under many dangers, and brought some from the mountains to teach them and learn the language from them. He had also published several very interesting treatises on the meow. But its activity was repeatedly interrupted by military conflicts. He was chased from his station, plundered and mistreated by robbers. After twelve years of activity, he suddenly died of a stroke.

His widow Friederike Johanne (* December 8, 1830 in Adelberg; † January 14, 1893 in Kornwestheim), the daughter of the Lutheran pastor Gottlob Ludwig Lechler and his wife Friederike Rosine (née Williardt), the widow of Ferdinand Genähr, returned with two small children back home (marriage to Ferdinand Genähr on February 26, 1853 in Hong Kong and second marriage to Adam Krolczyk on January 2, 1868 in Hong Kong)
