Stephen David Crocker (born October 15, 1944 in Pasadena (California) ) is an American computer scientist and Internet pioneer .

biography

Crocker studied at the University of California, Los Angeles , where he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1968 and a doctorate in computer science in 1977 . In the late 1960s he worked - with Vinton Cerf and Jon Postel , among others - in the research team that developed the network protocols for the Arpanet , the forerunner of the Internet. Crocker wrote the first RFC - which subsequently defined the Internet standards - which was published on April 7, 1969.

In the 1970s, Crocker worked as a program manager at the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and as a senior researcher at the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California (USC). He founded the Computer Science Laboratory of the Aerospace Corporation , which he directed from 1981 to 1986. He then went on to be the vice president of Trusted Information Systems , a computer security company. In 1994 he was co-founder and technical director of the Internet payment service CyberCash . In 1998 he founded the Internet service provider Executive DSL . In 1999 he was co-founder and managing director of Longitude Systems . In 2002 he became co-founder and managing director of the research company Shinkuro.

Association work

In 1969 the Network Working Group (NWG) was founded, of which Crocker was a member and from which the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) later emerged.

Crocker has served as director of security for the IETF, member of the Internet Architecture Board , chairman of the Security and Stability Advisory Committee at ICANN , board member of the Internet Society, and has held numerous other honorary positions related to Internet development.
