The Internet Society ( ISOC ; German Internet Association ) was founded in 1992 at the INET conference in Kobe ( Japan ) and, as a non-governmental organization, is responsible for maintaining and further developing the Internet infrastructure.

ISOC is headquartered in Reston , Virginia (near Washington, DC ) and Geneva (Switzerland). It consists of more than 6,000 individuals and around 130 organizations from over 170 countries .

The more than 62,000 members (as of October 2019) are obliged to contribute to the worldwide spread of the Internet and to guarantee its continued existence. This includes the publication of the so-called Request for Comments . The board of the ISOC ( Board of Trustees ) consists of 15 members who are elected by all members worldwide. The ISOC is home to the the Internet Standards competent and resource management bodies : IETF , IESG , IAB , IRTF , and IANA (the latter has in 2003 some of their tasks ICANN transmitted). Current developments are presented through regular publications .
