The Internet Research Task Force ( IRTF ; German Internet Research Working Group ) is next to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) one of two working groups of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). It was founded in 1986 to promote research and development in the field of networks and their techniques. It consists of researchers in the field of network technology with a focus on the Internet .

The Internet Research Steering Group (IRSG) leads and coordinates the research work. Sometimes there are interfaces with the work of the IETF. There is even an overlap among the members of the groups.

The IRTF consists of research groups that deal with the following topics, among others:

  1. End-to-end
  2. Information Infrastructure Architecture
  3. Privacy and Security
  4. Internet Resource Discovery
  5. Routing
  6. Services management
  7. Reliable multicast
