Joachim Viohl
Joachim Viohl (born May 26, 1933 in Berlin ) is a German dentist . He was a professor at the Free University of Berlin and developed the internationally used FDI tooth scheme .
Life
Viohl completed his school days in Königs Wusterhausen , Rinteln and Hameln . After studying dentistry for three semesters at the Philipps University of Marburg , he moved to the Free University of Berlin. In 1961 he received his doctorate as Dr. med. dent. with the topic of his doctoral thesis "The intensity threshold for vibrations in the human tooth" and completed his habilitation in 1971 for the subject of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine with the habilitation thesis "Reliability of clinical caries findings on permanent teeth after 4,000 multiple examinations". In 1981 he turned down a call to Chair 2 for Dental Prosthetics at the Georg-August University of Göttingen . In 1983 the chair for dental materials science ( C4 professorship ) was established at the Free University of Berlin and Viohl was appointed. He headed the chair until his retirement on September 30, 1997. He supervised doctoral students until 2007. Viohl is married and has two children.
Development of the FDI dental scheme
In 1928, IBM patented an 80-column punched card format with rectangular holes, which was widely used as the IBM card until the 1970s . Based on this, Viohl developed a tooth scheme that could be placed on the punch card. Due to the limitation to 80 columns, equal to 80 characters, the tooth designations in the tooth scheme were reduced to just two digits per tooth . The 32 teeth of the human dentition could be represented and recorded with 64 digits, equal to 64 characters. The term “upper, right, permanent, first premolar ” became “14”. This created the entry into data processing , which was used at the Free University of Berlin from 1960.
When the FDI , the World Association of Dentists , was looking for a uniform, internationally recognized system for tooth names for international communication, in particular for examinations in the context of forensic dentistry , Viohl proposed his two-digit scheme to the FDI special committee for uniform assessment of the Subcommittee on Forensic Odontology Teeth in front. Due to the many years of successful use of the documentation of dental findings, his proposal was the solution for the FDI. It has also since been used by the World Health Organization as the WHO Dental Scheme . In 1971 a DIN standard was issued (DIN 13910), later the ISO 3950 notation. It is also known as the two-digit system .

In 1972 Hugo Triadan developed a dental scheme for animals that has been used worldwide since then. In doing so, he was based on the Viohl tooth scheme.
Material science activity
Viohl was involved in the testing of dental materials by DIN. He headed the working committee for filling materials in the Dental Standards Committee of DIN and was chairman of the processing commission for dentistry at the Federal Health Office (now the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM)) for almost ten years . He has written over 100 materials science publications.
