Matthias Kern

Matthias Kern (born July 11, 1958 in Oberbegrenzebach ) is a German dentist and professor for dental prosthetics, propaedeutics and materials science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . Since 1998, Kern has been director of the Clinic for Dental Prosthetics, Propaedeutics and Materials Science at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel. Core's main areas of work are fixed and partial dentures, adhesive prosthetics, all-ceramic restorations and materials science. Kern gained fame with the development of the single-wing adhesive bridge and as an advocate of the single central dental implant for fixing a full denture in the edentulous lower jaw.

Life

Matthias Kern was born in 1958 in Ober Grenzebach , Hessen (Schwalm). His parents are Karl-Heinz and Ruth Kern, née Petri. Kern has four siblings. He grew up in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain, where he attended elementary school. After that, Kern attended grammar school in Steinatal, 5 km away, where he graduated from high school in 1977.

From 1980 to 1985, Kern completed a degree in dentistry at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1985 he received his license to practice medicine. From 1985 to 1989 he was an assistant at the prosthetic department of the University Dental Clinic in Freiburg. In 1987 he received his doctorate as Dr. med. dent. In 1989 he was appointed to the Academic Council. 1991–1993 followed a research stay at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (grant from the German Research Foundation ). In 1995 he received his habilitation and the license to teach (Venia legendi) for the subject of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine (ZMK), as well as the appointment as academic director and appointment as senior physician of the prosthetic department of the University Dental Clinic Freiburg. In 1997 he received a call to the C4 professorship for dental prosthetics, propaedeutics and materials science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, where he became acting director from October 1997. In 1998 he was appointed university professor and appointed director of the Clinic for Dental Prosthetics, Propaedeutics and Materials Science. From 2002 to 2011 he was Dean of Studies in Dentistry at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.

Kern is the father of five children.
