Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety

The Scientific Committee on "Consumer Safety" (English: Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, SCCS) was founded in 2008 by the European Commission established. Together with the Scientific Committees “Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) and “Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks” (SCENIHR), it is part of an advisory structure for scientific risk assessment in the areas of consumer safety, public health and the environment. The committee has up to 17 members - scientific experts who cover the widest possible range of scientific disciplines. These are appointed by the European Commission for three years. Originally, the maximum term of office was three consecutive terms of three years each. In 2016 the term of office was extended to five years.

Jurisdiction

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety prepares reports on all types of health and safety risks (in particular chemical, biological, mechanical and other physical risks) from non-food consumer goods (e.g. cosmetics and their components, toys, textiles, clothing, personal care products and household products (e.g., detergents, etc.) and services (e.g., tattoos, tanning beds, etc.).
