Teddy Pendergrass
Teddy Pendergrass , actually Theodore DeReese Pendergrass (* 26. March 1950 in Kingstree , South Carolina ; † 13. January 2010 in Philadelphia ) was an American R & B - musicians .
life and career
His musical roots are in the gospel choirs in his hometown of Philadelphia; In 1969 Teddy Pendergrass was with his doo-wop band "The Cadillacs" in the opening act of the group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes . The band's founder Harold Melvin then hired him to replace the lead singer at the time, John Atkins, who had been out on tour in 1970 due to illness. The group had numerous commercial successes during the Philly Sound era of producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff , before Pendergrass finally made the decision to break away from the band and continue working as a solo singer. His manager at this time was the American music manager Shep Gordon .
Four of his first albums between 1977 and 1981 achieved platinum status . He made some top 10 hits in the pop charts. The album Teddy (1979) reached number 5 on the American pop album charts. Due to its large number of female followers, Pendergrass successfully organized concerts to which only women were allowed.
At the height of his career, he was in a serious car accident on March 18, 1982 . He got off the road in his Rolls-Royce on a highway in Pennsylvania . His injuries were so severe that from then on he was paraplegic and dependent on a wheelchair. However, he continued his career. After eight albums for Philadelphia International Records , he moved to Elektra Records in 1984. In 1984 he sang in a wheelchair in the video for Hold Me with Whitney Houston .
On July 13, 1985, Pendergrass performed with Ashford & Simpson at the legendary Live Aid concert in Philadelphia. In the 1980s and 1990s he released other albums and a biography with Patricia Romanowski under the title Truly Blessed .
After he was diagnosed with colon cancer, he underwent a successful operation on June 5, 2009 and was discharged home on June 15, 2009. However, due to acute problems with the respiratory system, he had to be hospitalized again the following day. Seven months later, he died of lung failure on January 13, 2010 in a Philadelphia hospital .
