Eduard von Feuchtersleben (born July 30, 1798 in Krakow , † April 13, 1857 in Aussee ) was an Austrian mining engineer and writer.

Life

childhood

Eduard von Feuchtersleben was the grandson of the Viennese African Angelo Soliman (around 1721–1796) and was born in Krakow in 1798. His parents were Josephine (née Soliman, 1772-1801) and Ernst von Feuchtersleben (1765-1834), an engineer from Hildburghausen in Germany in the Austrian civil service. After the mother's early death, the father returned to Vienna. There Ernst von Feuchtersleben married a second time, and in 1806 the half-brother Ernst junior came. zur Welt (d. 1849), who also lost his mother after a short time. From then on a housekeeper looked after the two boys.

Education

Eduard von Feuchtersleben attended high school in Vienna, studied here and in Schemnitz and became a mining engineer. Since 1832 he was employed in Aussee as a brewing smelter (senior official) in traditional salt production .

circle of friends

Eduard von Feuchtersleben had an illustrious circle of acquaintances and friends, especially from the world of writers and theater. His friends included the playwrights Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872), Eduard von Bauernfeld (1802–90) and Nikolaus Lenau (1802–50). Johann Ludwig Deinhardstein (1794–1859) seems to have been the most important friend. He was not only a successful playwright, but from 1832 to 1841 also Vice Director of the Vienna Burgtheater .

Von Feuchtersleben was neither married nor had any children.

Act

Works

Since 1817 at the latest, Eduard von Feuchtersleben has been writing small plays for amateur theater, essays and poems, which have also been printed since 1822. The poetic snapshots of landscapes and people that he met on his inspection trips are delightful. Incidentally, he never addresses the African origins of his grandfather Angelo Soliman.

Influence on his brother

Eduard von Feuchtersleben was not an important man of letters, but thanks to his extensive education and enthusiasm for poetry in the romantic spirit, he encouraged his half-brother Ernst von Feuchtersleben to also deal with poetry. He studied medicine, literature, philosophy and art history in Vienna, where he became a doctor, influential critic, poet and essayist. Among his numerous medical writings, the title "On the dietetics of the soul", published in 1838, is considered the main work. This made him the founder of medical psychology.

Eduard and Ernst von Feuchtersleben were bound by the most intimate affection for a lifetime, and Ernst dedicated some of his texts to the older half-brother. He also campaigned for a complete edition of Eduard's works, but this project remained just a plan.
