Carteret is a city in Middlesex County , New Jersey , United States . In the 2010 census , 22,844 inhabitants were registered.

As of the 2000 census, there are 20,709 people, 7,039 households and 5,208 families in the city. The population density is 1,833.9 inhabitants per km². 68.76% of the population are White, 9.54% African American , 0.24% Native American , 8.32% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 9.26% other races, and 3.86% mixed races. 23.37% are Latinos of any race.
Of the 7,039 households, 35.5% have children under the age of 18. 52.1% of these are married couples living together, 16.6% are single mothers, 26.0% are not families, 21.9% consist of single households and 11.1% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 88, the average family size 3.38.
