Dorothy Gilman

Dorothy Gilman Butters (born June 25, 1923 in New Brunswick , New Jersey , † February 2, 2012 in Rye Brook , New York ) was an American author. Her espionage novels with the main character Emily Pollifax, who is used for special missions of the CIA when she retires, are particularly popular .

She began to write while studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1940 to 1945) and published her first novel in 1949. Between 1949 and 1963 she published books for young people as Dorothy Gilman Butters. Since her divorce in 1965, she wrote novels for adults and published them, including the Pollifax adventures, under her maiden name Dorothy Gilman.

Film adaptations

The first Pollifax novel was filmed in 1971 under the title Mrs Pollifax - Spy (director: Leslie H. Martinson ) and in 1999 as the TV adaptation The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax with Angela Lansbury in the title role.
