The Greene County is a county in the US state of Iowa . The county seat is Jefferson .

The county is west of the geographic center of Iowa and is traversed by the Racoon River . It has an area of 1,479 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. The following counties border Greene County:

Greene County was formed on January 15, 1851 from former parts of Dallas County and was self-administered from 1854. It was named after General Nathanael Greene (1742–1786), a general in the Continental Army in the War of Independence .
The first settler was Truman Davis in 1849. He settled on the Racoon River.
The first courthouse, still made of wood, was built in 1856. Before that, court was held in a log cabin in southeast Jefferson. The second courthouse, made of red brick, was built in 1870. The building, still in use today, was built in 1917 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
A total of 17 sites and structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Greene County had 9,336 people in 4,311 households. The population density was 6.3 people per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 97.6 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Statistically, 2.18 people lived in each of the 4,311 households.
23.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.0 percent were between 18 and 64 and 20.9 percent were 65 years or older. 50.6 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 44,476 USD . The per capita income was $ 23,727. 11.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line
