Julius von Roeck (born September 12, 1818 in Mönchroth , Rot an der Rot , † April 22, 1884 in Memmingen ) was the owner of an art mill and mayor of Memmingen from 1865 to 1884 .

Life

After completing his apprenticeship as a merchant at J. Christ. Plebst in Memmingen he worked, among other things, in the Schelhorn calico factory. Together with Philipp Hüetlin , a business traveler from the Kattunfabrik, he founded the Hüetlin & Roeck wheat mill in Memmingen. In 1846 he married Sophie, née Zeller. The marriage remained childless.

Political offices

Von Roeck, who is considered to be “moderately liberal”, was elected on April 28, 1848 in the 7th constituency of Swabia in Memmingen, behind Thomas Mayer , district court assessor from Ottobeuren, who was considered to be “left-wing liberal with a radical tendency” , as the first substitute for the parliament of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

In the autumn of 1848, von Roeck was elected to the council of municipal representatives. From 1854 Roeck was chairman of this college.

Von Roeck played a key role in the efforts to build the Illertal Railway around 1860 .

On May 26, 1865, von Roeck was elected mayor by the local authority. He remained so until his death in 1884.

With the election of Roecks as mayor, the era of conservative patrician mayors came to an end. A sign of the change of times in urban politics is the city's first public job creation measure under von Roeck. As a result of the war in 1866 , two factories had to close, and another reduced its work. In addition, planned new buildings were partially omitted and partially interrupted. For many wage workers, construction workers and factory workers, the regular summer wages were canceled. Through the job creation measure, the Kemptner Graben in the south was filled, for which the city had to take out a loan, the unemployed got through the winter well.

Honors

For his services he was awarded the Order of Merit 1st Class of St. Michael as well as the personal nobility by Ludwig II .
