Star Davis, a teenage orphan , leaves the orphanage to rescue her younger sister Simone Davis, who was separated from Star after her mother's death, from her sexually molesting adoptive father. While running away from Simone's adoptive family, they meet Alexandra Crane, a young singer who is under the shadow of her successful father. Alexandra teams up with Star and Simone to leave New York and move to Atlanta and pursue her dreams of becoming a successful girl group .

The first airing of the first season took place in the United States from December 14, 2016 to March 15, 2017 on Fox , the second from September 27, 2017 to May 23, 2018, and the third season from September 26, 2018. The series finale finally aired on May 8, 2019.
The German-language first broadcast has been on the pay-TV channel ProSieben FUN since October 5, 2017 . While the first season was broadcast from October 5, 2017 to November 9, 2017, the first nine episodes of the second season were from March 29 to April 26, 2018 on the channel. The release of the remaining episodes of the second season and the first eight episodes of the third season started on December 20, 2018 and ended on February 28, 2019. From January 2 to March 5, 2020, the remaining episodes of the final, third season were on ProSieben FUN broadcast.
The series has been on German free TV since December 27, 2019 on the television channel Joyn Primetime .
