Daron Vartan Malakian (born July 18, 1975 in Hollywood , California ) is the singer and guitarist of the rock band Scars on Broadway . Malakian gained fame as the guitarist of the US metal band System of a Down , for which he wrote most of the music and most recently took over a larger part of the lyrics. Like the other "SOAD" band members, Malakian is of Armenian origin.

Career

childhood

Malakian took an early interest in heavy metal . Ever since his cousin played him a KISS recording at the age of four , he became enthusiastic about this genre. Malakian began to listen to bands like Van Halen , Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Mötley Crüe or Black Sabbath . In his teens, he turned to even heavier music like that of Slayer , Venom, and Cannibal Corpse . Around the age of 17, he took a liking to the Beatles and calls John Lennon one of his greatest influences in songwriting. As a child, Malakian went to an Armenian school in Hollywood , which his later bandmates Serj Tankian and Shavo Odadjian also attended. He then attended Roosevelt Middle School and finally went to Glendale High School , where he said he often skipped and was involved in many fights. Malakian originally wanted to play drums, but his parents did not allow him, so he began to play the guitar.

System of a Down

In 1995 Malakian met Serj Tankian , who later became System of a Down's vocalist , while they were sharing the same rehearsal studio with different bands. Tankian played keyboard for his band, Malakian was lead singer for his. After both bands broke up, they decided to form the band Soil together , in which Serj would take on the role of lead singer. Shavo Odadjian soon joined them, initially as a manager for Soil, but later on as a bassist . A short time later Andy Khachaturian came on as drummer, who was later replaced by John Dolmayan - System of a Down had been found. The band name comes from a poem that Malakian wrote about the Armenian genocide and called "Victims of a Down".

Malakian was named fourth best guitarist of 2005 by Metal Edge Magazine .
