Lonely Day is a song by the American alternative metal band System of a Down and is also the second single from their album Hypnotize . The single was released on April 7, 2006. The lyrics were written by the band's guitarist Daron Malakian . Lonely Day appears in both the movie Disturbia and its trailer.

The song was also nominated in 2006 for a Grammy Award in the "Best Hard Rock Performance" category.

Emergence

Lonely Day was created as part of the album Hypnotize, which was released in 2005, the same year as the first part of the double album, Mezmerize .

Production of the double album began in July 2004. The band moved together with Rick Rubin to the Californian studio The Mansion , where production of the album lasted until November. For this purpose, among other things, songs were used that had been written several years earlier. Since enough songs for two albums were created during the production, it was decided to release two albums.

Text and music

Guitar intro from Lonely Day audio sample ? / iAudio file / audio sample

The song begins with a slowly played guitar part in 3/4 time. This is repeated twelve times. After the fifth repetition, the guitarist's voice begins, who begins the song with this passage:

"Find a lonely day, and it's mine. The most loneliest day of my life. Such a lonely day should be banned. It's a day that I can't stand. "

“Such a lonely day and it's mine. The loneliest day of my life. Such a lonely day should be banned. A day that I can't stand. "

The sentence “The most loneliest day of my life” is grammatically incorrect, so it should actually only be called “The loneliest day of my life”.

Then the other instruments ( drums and electric bass ) and background vocals kick in and the song culminates in the chorus:

"And if you go, I wanna go with you. And if you die, I wanna die with you. Take your hand and walk away. "

“And if you go, then I want to go with you. And if you die, then I want to die with you. [I would] take your hand and walk away. "

After a guitar solo , the song ends with a vocal solo by the guitarist, with special emphasis on the last word:

"Find a lonely day, and it's mine. It's the day that I'm glad I survived. "

“Such a lonely day and it's mine. The day I luckily survived. "

The song is dedicated to Malakian's cousin who died in a fire.

A special feature of Lonely Day is that, unlike most of the band's other songs, the band's guitarist, Daron Malakian, takes on the lead vocals, while Serj Tankian, the band's actual main vocalist, only does the backing vocals takes over. According to Malakian, this change was not a big change for either of them. He sang most of the parts in the previous bands of System of a Down , but the switch to Tankian as lead singer only came when the new band was founded. Furthermore, the song is one of the few rather slow pieces by the band.

The song was originally released on the 2005 album Hypnotize . In 2006 the single of the same name was released, on which five more songs can be heard. Furthermore, a member of the Wu Tang clan has a guest appearance on the album, namely on the song Shame , which is a cover version of the original Shame on a Nigga from 1993.

Music video

The band also released a music video for Lonely Day in 2006 , directed by the band's bassist Shavo Odadjian. In this, all band members sit in a tour bus that drives through a city that has been changed with the help of CGI animations so that it looks as if individual objects are burning without the city residents noticing or reacting to it. However, the focus of the video is mainly on the loneliness of the people; both the band members and the extras.

Live performances

When performing live, Malakian only plays guitar and sings while Tankian plays the keyboard and Odadjian plays the bass again. Furthermore, the guitar outro is sometimes dispensed with during live performances.

criticism

Critics often saw commercial backgrounds in the single and judged them accordingly, while the actual album Hypnotize usually did well.

single

"It has the wackiness of Serj's vocals, catchiness of Daron's riffs, solidness of Dolmayan's drums, and nothingness of Shavo's bass that System fans adore. So if you are not a fan don't get this. If you are a fan and have a hunger for just a little more system, this might just satiate you. It's at least worth a listen. "

“The single has the craziness of Serj's lyrics, the catchiness of Daron's riffs, the force of Dolmayan's drums, and the voidness of Shavo's bass that System fans love. So if you're not a fan, don't buy [the single]. If you're a fan and fancy a little more System of a Down, this might be the one for you. At least it is worth listening to. "

“This is perhaps the finest, and most important heavy metal album of the twenty-first century so far. Only history will confirm or deny that but really, what are you waiting for? This is the sound of the past, present and future of rock music, all stuffed into a ballistic missile cruising at 200mph over the Black Sea - and it's headed right over here. Enjoy. "

“Hypnotize is perhaps the best and most important heavy metal album of the 21st century to date. Only history will confirm this or not, but seriously, what are you waiting for? This is the sound of the past, present and future of rock music, all packed into a rocket that speeds over the Black Sea at 200 miles an hour - and it is heading straight for us. Have fun."
