Gray Daze (initially Gray Daze ) was an American rock band from Phoenix, Arizona , formed in 1993 by drummer Sean Dowdell and bassist Jonathan Krause.

history

Dowdell and Krause had previously left their bands and came into contact through Dowdell's brother. After a long search for a suitable singer, lead singer Chester Bennington , who had previously worked with Dowdell in the band Sean Dowdell and His Friends? had played and later was the singer of the American nu-metal / rock bands Linkin Park and Dead by Sunrise , as well as the guitarist Steve Mitchell in the band, the latter being replaced after a few months by Jason Barnes. 1995 Krause left the band and was replaced by Mace Beyers. Shortly after the release of the debut album Wake Me , guitarist Barnes also left the band. Bobby Benish took his place. In 1997 the band released their second and final album … No Sun Today .

At the height of their success, Gray Daze landed a local radio hit with B-12 in 1997 and played in front of up to 1,500 viewers.

1998 Bennington and Beyers left the band due to internal conflicts. Lead singer Chester Bennington was unhappy with other members trying to sell the lyrics he and Dowdell had written. In 1998 he joined the band Xero, which was then renamed Hybrid Theory and later became world famous as Linkin Park . With the new bass player Dave Sardegna and the singer Jodi Wendt, the band initially continued as Gray Daze, but ultimately renamed itself to Waterface .

Dowdell continued his career as a tattoo artist after Gray Daze .

In 2002 Bobby Benish was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A live show reunion and remastered version of … No Sun Today was planned to raise funds for his recovery. Both projects had to be canceled due to opposition from the Linkin Park record company. Benish succumbed to the disease in 2004.

To promote the Dowdell and Bennington tattoo studio, the two founded the cover band Bucket of Weenies in 2005. The band also included Ryan Shuck, who later became a member of Bennington's side project Dead by Sunrise , Mike Rouse and Mike Brown. The band made eight appearances in 2005 and 2006.

A reunion with a live performance was planned for September 23, 2017. The line-up should include Bennington, Dowdell, Barnes and Beyers. Since Bennington committed suicide on July 20, 2017, a memorial event took place on September 2, 2017 with live performances by Sean Dowdell and Mace Beyers as well as Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh ( Dead by Sunrise ). Since then, Gray Daze have been working on an album with new recordings of old songs, with some of the original vocals by Chester Bennington being retained. There are also guest appearances by Chester's son Jaime Bennington, Marcos Curiel ( POD ), Chris Traynor ( Bush , Helmet ) and Ryan Shuck (Dead by Sunrise). The album was released on June 26, 2020.
