The Small Arber in the field of the five kilometers south of the town and municipality of Lohberg (Upper Palatinate) is one of three Kar lakes of the Bavarian Forest . On the Czech side of this extensive forest area there are another five cirque lakes in the Bohemian Forest . The lakes are relics of the Ice Age and can be classified as cirque lakes , tongue basin lakes or as a hybrid of both and surrounded by a partly dense forest . In 1882, Joseph Partsch was the first to recognize the glacial nature of the moraine walls in the lake area.

The Kleine Arbersee has a total area of 63,600 m². It has a very low pH of 4.5, but according to other information it is 5.51. Due to the low pH, the lake was free of fish for a long time. Only small organisms can survive in this environment. Investigations have shown that individual brook trout have been living in the still waters again since the beginning of the 2010s . Brown trout can also be seen again in the Seebach below the Kleiner Arbersee .

A special feature of the two Arber lakes (Kleiner and Großer Arbersee ) are the so-called swinging lawns that sit on the bank and grow against the surface of the water. This unusual natural phenomenon can be especially admired at the Kleiner Arbersee . They were created after 1885, when the lake was dammed by about one meter to allow the wood to drift in the Seebach (and further in the white rain and rain). The lake increased from 2.9 hectares to 9.6 hectares. At the same time, the moor felts detached themselves from the shore and for a long time drifted as " floating islands " on the lake. For several years, however, their position has been more or less stable. In places, the islands are 1.5 to 3.5 meters thick, so that even 40 to 60-year-old spruces grow on them. The largest island has an area of 4,500 m². According to measurements taken in the mid-1990s, the water depth fluctuates between 6 and 10 meters. Entering the floating islands on the Kleiner and Großer Arbersee is not permitted, as there is a risk to life. In addition to a large number of ditches and small streams, the Kleiner Arbersee is mainly fed by the Seebach , which flows out of the lake in the south. At a weir structure in the north, the water from the Kleiner Arbersee flows into the Seebach. From the mouth of the Ebenbach, the flowing water bears the name Weißer Regen .

On the northeast bank there was a glassworks , the Seehütte , between 1714 and 1742 and then again between 1783 and around 1800 . The foundations of the former glassworks are designated as a ground monument . Today the Gasthaus Seehäusl is located on the west bank . The Kleine Arbersee can be "circumnavigated" on foot on a marked circular route.

Nature reserve

The nature reserve Kleiner Arbersee was created on November 28, 1959 and changed on March 19, 1998. It has a size of 307.5 hectares and includes the lake, the surrounding moors and natural silting areas as well as coniferous forests on the Kleiner and Großer Arber. The Protection Ordinance of 1984 stipulates that the islands are not to be entered and that the water may not be navigated by watercraft. However, due to a temporary exemption, rowing boats were hired out until the end of 1998. Today there are trails in the entire nature reserve. Dogs must be on a leash. Bathing - including sunbathing - is prohibited. Otters and beavers were able to resettle in and around the water. The shy and endangered capercaillie also finds refuge in light, structured forests with shrub-rich ground vegetation. A rare plant species of the swinging lawn is the bog orchid, swamp soft orchid, found here .
