Joseph Partsch

Joseph Partsch (born July 4, 1851 in Schreiberhau , Lower Silesia , † June 22, 1925 in Bad Brambach , Vogtland ) was a German geographer and university professor .

Life

Partsch studied from 1869 to 1874 classical philology , history and geography at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . Carl Neumann was one of his teachers . In 1874 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. His habilitation in the following year, he was a private lecturer in geography in Breslau in 1875/76 . In 1876 he was appointed associate professor for geography and ancient history. Full professor since 1884 , Partsch was elected rector for the academic year 1899/1900 . In his rector's speech on October 15, 1899, he dealt with the geographical work of the 19th century. In 1905 he moved to the University of Leipzig . After 17 years of service, he retired in 1922 .

Partsch was one of the most important geographers at the turn of the century. One of his focal points was Greece and especially the Greek islands, which he investigated with the help of geographical and ancient philological methods (monographs on Corfu , Leukas , Kephallenia and Ithaca ). He made significant contributions to the study of the Ice Age by subjecting the mountains of the High Tatras and the Black Forest to geological studies. Josef Partsch was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences (since 1901), a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences (since 1906), a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1909) and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences (since 1922) , extraordinary (1914) and since 1920 external member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , honorary doctorate from the Universities of Geneva and Athens and holder of the Carl-Ritter-Medal of the Society for Geography in Berlin .

His son is the legal scholar Joseph Aloys August Partsch . The lawyer Karl Josef Partsch , the media scientist Marianne Grewe-Partsch and the biologist Karl Partsch are his grandchildren.

Partsch's extensive estate is kept in the archive of the Leipzig Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography.
