Joseph Aloys August Partsch

Joseph Aloys August Partsch (born September 2, 1882 in Breslau ; † March 30, 1925 in Geneva ) was a German professor of Roman and civil law at the universities of Geneva, Göttingen, Freiburg, Bonn and Berlin. He was the son of the geographer Joseph Partsch .

From 1900 Partsch studied law in Breslau, Geneva and Leipzig. In 1904 he received his doctorate from the University of Wroclaw . In 1906 the only twenty-three-year-old was appointed associate professor at the University of Geneva without prior habilitation , and in 1910 he went to the University of Göttingen as a full professor . In 1911 he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , in 1920 he became a full professor at the University of Bonn and in 1921 he took over a professorship at the University of Berlin . He held this office until his untimely death. In 1914 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Scientifically, Partsch dealt primarily with ancient Greek law, papyrology and comparative law . At Freiburg University he spent years together with Otto Lenel , with whom he worked closely. He later advised and represented the German government in arbitration negotiations under the Versailles Treaty .

His son Karl Josef Partsch also worked as a lawyer and legal scientist.
