Katsuhito Asano ( Japanese 浅 野 勝 人 , Asano Katsuhito ; born April 19, 1938 in Toyohashi , Aichi Prefecture , Japan ) is a former Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and member of the Sangiin , the upper house, for Aichi. In the LDP he belonged to the Asō faction .

Life

Asano, a graduate of Waseda University , worked from 1961 as a political journalist for the public television broadcaster NHK . In the 1990 election to Shūgiin , the lower house, he was elected to parliament as an independent candidate with LDP support on the second attempt. In 1996 he was parliamentary state secretary ( seimujikan ) in the defense authority , in 2000 in the foreign ministry .

In 2003 he was voted out of office - for the second time after 1993 - and ran for Sangiin in the 2004 election in Aichi (3 seats). It received over 800,000 votes, the highest number of votes. As an opponent of Prime Minister Jun'ichirō Koizumi's post-privatization law , Asano abstained from the first vote in the Sangiin in 2005, but voted for the law after Koizumi had the Shūgiin dissolved and there expelled the opponents of post- privatization from the LDP.

In 2006 he became State Secretary ( fuku-daijin , "Vice Minister") in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Shinzo Abe . In May 2009, Tarō Asō nominated him as the successor to the resigned Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshitada Kōnoike . He held the office until the resignation of the Asō cabinet in September 2009. In 2010 he was chairman of the disciplinary committee of the Sangiin.

In the 2010 Sangiin election , Asano stopped running for a further six-year term as MP.
