The Mikawa Bay ( Jap. 三河湾 , Mikawa-wan ) is a bay in the south of Aichi Prefecture (historically the province of Mikawa ) in Japan , surrounded by the Chita Peninsula in the west and the Atsumi Peninsula in the east and south. The western part of the bay is therefore also called Chita Bay ( 知 多 湾 , Chita-wan ) and the eastern Atsumi Bay ( 渥 美 湾 , Atsumi-wan ). Their area is about 604 km².
The largest islands in the bay and at the same time the only inhabited islands in the prefecture are Saku-shima , Shinojima and Himaka-jima at the mouth of the bay. The most important tributaries are the 1st order Toyo-gawa in the east and Yahagi-gawa (including the old Yahagifurukawa river) in the north.
In recent years, pollution of the shallow, trapped water in the bay has become a problem.
