Shinojima ( Japanese 篠 島 ) is a Japanese island in Mikawa Bay .

geography

The 0.94 km² island is located at the exit of Mikawa Bay in Ise Bay , halfway between the Chita Peninsula and the Atsumi Peninsula , with the island of Himaka-jima to the north . Geologically, the island consists of granite from the ryoke belt. Shinojima, which administratively forms the district of the same name (ōaza) incorporated into Minamichita in the Aichi prefecture in 1961 , has 1763 inhabitants (as of 2010). The island of Shinojima is in turn subdivided from north to south into the suburbs (aza) Nakatejima ( 中 手 島 ), Koisojima ( 小 磯 島 ), Uraiso ( 浦 磯 ), Higashiyama ( 東山 ), Gōdo ( 神 戸 ), Teruhama ( 照 浜 ), Nagahama ( 長 浜 ), Dōyama ( 堂 山 ), Akaishi ( 赤石 ), Tanabashi ( 棚 橋 ), Mazegasaki ( 南風 崎 ), Bezai ( 弁 財 ), Shiabi ( 汐 味 ), Ushitori ( 牛 取 ) and Kujihama ( 鯨 浜 ).

Shinojima is also surrounded by various uninhabited islets, which - apart from Togame-jima - form further suburbs:

Shinmei shrine

The island has a close connection to the very important Ise shrine . This is completely rebuilt every 20 years, whereby one of the halls to be replaced is always shipped to Shinojima and donated to the local Shinmei shrine ( 神明 神社 , Shinmei-jinja ). The replaced building of the Shinmei shrine goes over to the neighboring Hachiōji shrine ( 八 王子 社 , Hachiōji-sha ). The Shinmei shrine is said to have been founded in 771 and houses three kami including the patron god of the island, and the Hachiōji shrine in 1288 with eight kami including a patron god of the sea and for shipbuilding.

The island has always been the sole supplier for the Ise shrine of exactly 508 Onbedai ( 御 幣 鯛 , cf. Onbe ), d. H. salted and dried sea bream as offerings to the gods. The Ise shrine maintains a facility for the production of dried fish on Nakate-jima. This tradition is said to go back to Yamatohime-no-mikoto, the founder of the Ise shrine. For the transport to the Ise Shrine, 35 km away, the delivery is flagged with the characters 太 一 御用 ( taichi goyō , dt. About "matter of the first order"), which historically prevented pirates from attacking the ships and also caused the princes ( daimyō ) as Dedication to dismount from their horses.

Both shrines are located in the district of Gōdo, the name of which is a variant of Kambe , which historically indicates a settlement of households that work for a shrine.
