David "Dave" James Bancroft (born April 20, 1891 in Sioux City , Iowa , † October 9, 1972 in Superior , Wisconsin ) was an American baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball . His nickname was Beauty .
biography
Dave Bancroft joined in 1915 by Portland in the Pacific Coast League with the Philadelphia Phillies , filling the gap there in the position of shortstops from the Mickey Doolan had left. In his first year the Phillies won the championship in the National League with the excellent outfield player . In the World Series they were clearly defeated by the Boston Red Sox in five games. Two more second places should follow in the National League. After this time, the Phillies disappeared in the league's basement as their owner sold many good players for cash. In 1920 the time had come for Bancroft, too, when it was sold to the New York Giants . Here success returned for him, in 1921 and 1922 the New York Yankees could be defeated twice in the World Series. In 1923 it was again enough for the championship in the National League, but this year the Yankees celebrated their first title win. In 1924 Bancroft joined the Boston Braves . Giants manager John McGraw was reluctant to let him go, but did it as a favor for Christy Mathewson , who was president of the Braves, and for Bancroft himself, who was also the manager of the team. From Boston, Bancroft moved back to New York to the Brooklyn Dodgers before ending his career with the Giants in 1930.
In 1971, Bancroft was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee .
