Frederik Paulsen (born July 31, 1909 in Dagebüll as Friedrich Paulsen ; † June 3, 1997 in Alkersum on Föhr ) was a German-Swedish doctor and entrepreneur. He was the founder of the pharmaceutical company Ferring Pharmaceuticals , which has been run by his son Frederik Paulsen (junior) since 1988 .

Both parents come from the North Sea island of Föhr. The company name Ferring is derived from the name of the island: The Frisian name for Föhr is Feer , the adjective for it is fering ( pronounced with a short e ).

Frederik Paulsen's father was a post office worker who deliberately did not live on Föhr with his wife because he wanted to give his children a good education that was not possible on the island. In 1913 the family moved to Erfde and in 1917 to Kiel . There Frederik and his two brothers were able to attend the Kiel School of Academics and graduate from high school (Frederik 1928). The two sisters also attended secondary schools and graduated from high school. Frederik developed mainly aesthetic inclinations and was very interested in philosophy, literature and history as well as politics. During his medical studies (1928-1935 in Graz, Frankfurt am Main, Kiel and Basel) Paulsen came in 1933 in Kiel due to his political activities (leaflet campaign) in conflict with the National Socialists, so that the Gestapo arrested him and he from 1934 to 1935 in Neumünster was imprisoned. After his release from prison on April 7, 1935, he fled to Basel in Switzerland, where he passed his final exam and received his doctorate. To avoid the concentration camp, he emigrated to Malmö , where he became a Swedish citizen in 1942. With his research on hormones and their synthesis, he laid the foundation for the establishment of Ferring in Malmö in 1950. When he took over Swedish citizenship, Paulsen changed his original first name from Friedrich to Frederik.

In 1988 Paulsen founded the Ferring Foundation in Alkersum with the aim of creating an institution for the island of Föhr and all North Frisians on a secure economic foundation that should preserve their own language and culture.

After retiring from management at the age of 60, he died in 1997 at the age of 87 in Alkersum on Föhr.
