The iPhone 5s (original spelling with ? or small caps ) is the seventh smartphone in the iPhone series by the US company Apple . The device is functionally based on the in-house operating system Apple iOS and can be operated by the user mainly by touching the fingers on the multi-touch screen . The operating system version at launch was 7.0, the current version is 12.4.8. It has been available in the colors gray (manufacturer's name: space gray ), silver and gold, as well as with 16, 32 or 64 GB flash memory since September 20, 2013 in Germany and replaces the previous iPhone 5 model . The iPhone 5s has been available in Austria and Switzerland since October 25, 2013 and was replaced by the iPhone 6 on September 19, 2014 in Germany and on September 26, 2014 in Austria and Switzerland . With the launch of the iPhone SE on March 21, 2016, Apple removed the iPhone 5s from its range after two and a half years of sales.

The device and all essential technical details were first presented by the manufacturer on September 10, 2013 in Cupertino together with the iPhone 5C , just a few days before the planned start of sales.
design
Externally, the device largely corresponds to the iPhone 5 . There is also a stainless steel ring around the “home button”, which activates the fingerprint sensor that has also been added. This is now made from sapphire crystal. For the first time on an iOS device, the square with rounded corners, which symbolized an app icon, is no longer on the home button.
Furthermore, the rings around the camera and the double flash, which is oval-shaped on the iPhone 5s, have been removed. A thinner version of the Myriad font was used for the “iPhone” lettering on the back .
Furthermore, the iOS 7 operating system brings with it various design changes in the user interface.

Features & sensors
A fingerprint sensor called Touch ID has been built into the home button of the device , which can be used to unlock or automatically enter a password on the lock screen and in iTunes stores such as the App Store . In this case, no image of the fingerprint is created, but specific data of the imprint is encrypted and stored in a secure area of the A7 chip. The multi-touch screen has a resolution of 1136 × 640 pixels with a diagonal of 100 mm (approx. 4 inches) ( 16: 9 format). This corresponds to a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi). The surface of the screen is made of tough special glass from Corning (manufacturer name Gorilla Glass ).
SoC
The device has the in-house Apple A7 - SoC as a processing unit for user applications. This should offer twice the performance compared to the Apple A6 . The M7 - Coprocessor , which is a 32-bit microcontroller of the type LPC18A1 by NXP Semiconductors is, processes the signals from multiple sensors, such as that of the gyro sensor , the motion sensor and the compass . The iPhone 5S is the first smartphone based on a 64-bit architecture .
camera
The rear-exposed camera (rear camera, manufacturer's name iSight ) takes photos with eight megapixels and videos in 1080p . Apple did not increase the number of pixels, but increased the recording area (and thus the area of each pixel) in order to produce a lower-noise image. The camera also has a series picture function for up to ten pictures per second, a so-called true-tone flash with a color temperature that adapts to the ambient light and a slow motion function for videos with 120 pictures per second in 720p resolution. The front video camera with the FaceTime video system has a 1.2-megapixel resolution and can record video recordings with a resolution of 720p. Additional functions such as the so-called control center and AirDrop are provided by the iOS 7 operating system on the software side.
Cellular connections
The iPhone 5s can be used in the LTE networks of Deutsche Telekom , O 2 and Vodafone .
Like the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5s now supports nano SIM cards .
battery pack
The built-in lithium-ion battery (3.8 V, 5.92 Wh (1560 mAh)) promises a talk time of up to 10 hours with 3G network and up to 250 hours of standby mode, according to the manufacturer .

criticism
The iPhone 5s received mostly positive reviews. Among other things, the reliably functioning Touch ID sensor, the camera system and the iOS 7 operating system were praised.
security breach
On September 21, 2013, the Chaos Computer Club ( CCC ) reported that they had overcome the Touch ID security lock without a real finger. A photographed fingerprint was printed with a laser printer in 1200 dpi on a transparency film and skin-colored latex milk or white wood glue was applied. Heise Security Editor -in- Chief Jürgen Schmidt nevertheless considers Touch ID to be sensible, practicable and an improvement in security, since " the more than 50 percent of iPhone users who currently have no locks finally have to set up a passcode " in order to work use.
