iOS 9 is the 9th version of the iOS mobile operating system from Apple , which was developed as the successor to iOS 8. It was announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 13, 2015 and released on September 16, 2015.

On September 13, 2016, iOS 9 was replaced by its successor iOS 10 on all iPhones 5 and newer.

The current version is called iOS 9.3.6 and has been available for various Apple devices, including iPhone 4s (2011) and iPad mini (2012), since July 22, 2019 .

Changes

iOS 9 included many feature updates for built-in apps. Most notably, Notes was given the ability to draw sketches using various tools, image insertion, prominent visual representation for website links and map locations, and advanced list formatting; a completely new app from Apple News brings together articles from various sources. Apple Maps received support for mass transportation, although they were available in a limited number of locations at launch. Major new system updates include proactivity, combining Siri and advanced search to make the operating system aware of information (such as time and location) in a more contextual manner and to provide information to the user in advance. For searching, Proactive Intelligence can display instant results in a widget-like format, including weather, sports, news and more. iOS 9 added several multitasking features to the iPad. In iOS 9.3, Apple added a night shift mode that changes the color of the device's display to a warmer, less "blue light" shade to prevent a possible negative screen effect on users' circadian rhythms. In addition, iOS 9 brings new user experience features, including Quick Actions and Peek and Pop, based on the touch-sensitive display technology found in the iPhone 6s . Quick actions are shortcuts on the app icons on the home screen. Users can preview (“peek”) content without leaving the current screen before entering the previewed content in full view.
