The iPod touch is a mobile media player , a game console, an organizer and a WLAN platform from the American company Apple . It is part of the iPod product line. The iPod touch is operated as the only device in the iPod line with the complete iOS , as it runs on iPhones and iPads . The first iPod touch appeared on September 5, 2007. In the meantime, seven different generations have appeared, each of which differ in their features.
As of May 2013, Apple had sold more than 100 million iPod touch devices.
Device history
First generation
On September 5, 2007, Apple introduced the iPod touch at a special event in San Francisco . The device was based on the technology of the iPhone and was operated via a multi-touch screen. As with the iPhone, this takes up a large part of the surface of the top of the case. The case was very similar to that of the iPhone, but it is flatter and looks even flatter because of the rounded corners towards the back. The device was the first iPod to have WiFi . The iPod dock connector for a cable connection was also available.
Second generation
The second generation of the iPod touch was introduced on September 9, 2008. The design had been slightly revised: the back was now slightly curved, and there was also an integrated speaker and volume control on the left. Compared to the first generation, the device is 0.5 millimeters thicker. Technical innovations are Bluetooth capability and an integrated receiver for the Nike + iPod system. The battery life increases from 22 to 36 hours for music playback and from five to six hours for videos. In addition, a system on a chip (“SoC”), the S5L8720 , was used in an iOS device for the first time . The delivery firmware, iPhone OS 2.1.1, also brought new features, such as the App Store .
The devices were offered with 8, 16 and 32 GB. After the release of the 3rd generation iPod touch, the iPod touch 2G was only offered in the 8 GB version; its bootrom was slightly modified and was now identical to that of the iPod touch 3G.
Third generation
On September 9, 2009, Apple presented a technically modified, outwardly unchanged iPod touch, which was marketed as "iPod touch late 2009". Colloquially , it was called "iPod touch 3G" because it was the third iPod touch ever released. When introducing the iPhone OS 4.0, Apple used the name “iPod touch 3rd generation (late 2009)”. A new SoC, the S5L8922 , offered a new processor (ARM Cortex A8) and doubled memory (256 MB). There were models with 32 GB and 64 GB capacity. The iPod touch now also had voice control and “ VoiceOver ”. The battery life was reduced to 30 hours when playing music. The delivery software was iPhone OS 3.1. Apple advertised the device on television and on its own homepage as a “mobile game console ”.
Fourth generation
The fourth generation was introduced on September 1, 2010. It has a Retina display with a resolution of 960 × 640 pixels, support for Wi-Fi 4 , a camera on the back that also records HD videos and takes 0.7 megapixel photos , a second camera on the front with VGA resolution as well as a microphone and a gyroscope . The cameras do not offer autofocus and only static focusing . The SoC is an Apple A4 .
At 7.2 millimeters, the iPod touch 4G is almost 1½ millimeters thinner than its predecessor models, but has the same aluminum rear panel . Unlike the predecessor, there was again a variant with 8 GB of storage space . Thanks to the camera on the front, the iPod touch now supports “ FaceTime ”, Apple's video telephony service. FaceTime calls can only be made to devices with the appropriate software - other iPod touches, iPhones, iPads or Macs. According to Apple, the battery should last up to 40 hours for music playback and up to seven hours for video playback.
From October 12, 2011, the fourth generation iPod touch was also available in white and with 16 GB. Since the end of October 2012 it has only been offered with 16 and 32 GB; on May 30, 2013 sales were discontinued.
Fifth generation
On September 12, 2012, Apple introduced the fifth generation. It has the Apple A5 SoC and a larger Retina display , an iSight camera on the back that records Full HD videos and photos with 5 megapixels (2592 × 1936 pixels), a FaceTime camera on the front as well a microphone. For the first time there is also an LED flash for taking photos, which can also be used as a video light or a flashlight. At 6.1 millimeters, the model is 1.1 millimeters thinner than its predecessor. According to Apple, the battery should last up to 40 hours for music playback and up to eight hours for video playback. The iPod touch has a unibody housing made of anodized aluminum in the colors pink, yellow, blue, white and black as well as a red Product Red special edition, from which Apple donates part of the proceeds to the Global Found to fight AIDS in Africa , available. A wrist strap ( iPod touch loop ) can be attached to the back. The device introduces Siri voice control on the iPod. The device has no ambient light sensor for automatic screen brightness adjustment - according to Phil Schiller , manager and marketing vice president of Apple, for reasons of space. In addition to the 2.4 GHz band, the model also supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 4 for the first time in the 5 GHz frequency band. Apple's mobile operating system iOS 9.3.5 runs on the iPod . It is available in versions with 16, 32 and 64 GB of internal storage.
On May 30th, Apple added a 16 GB version with the same specifications as the 5th generation, but without the rear camera, the loop attachment and the brightly colored rear panels; it is only supplied with a black front and a silver-colored back. On September 10, 2013, Apple replaced the black version with a gray version. On June 26, 2014, the previous 16 GB model was replaced by a version that is identical to the 32 and 64 GB version. At the same time, prices were reduced, but on March 9, 2015 they were raised again by € 30 (the large model by € 40) due to the exchange rate.
Sixth generation
The sixth generation was released on July 15, 2015. It looks like the fifth generation, now has the Apple A8 SoC and does not have a camera loop. The new camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels and an optional slow motion function for filming. As with the iPod nano and iPod shuffle, the colors have been updated to match those of the iPhone 6 : silver, gold and "space gray" as well as the new colors dark blue and pink. There is also a Product Red special edition again. A 128 GB version was also introduced for an extra charge of 110 € compared to the 64 GB version. The prices of the other versions correspond to those of the predecessor.
After the rest of the iPods were discontinued on July 27, 2017, the prices of the iPod touch were lowered. The versions with 16 and 64 GB were no longer sold. The 32 GB version has cost 229 € or 229 CHF since then (previously 279 € in Germany, 289 € in Austria and 279 CHF in Switzerland). The 128 GB version is available for € 339 in Germany, € 349 in Austria and CHF 359 in Switzerland (previously € 449 in Germany, € 469 in Austria and CHF 449 in Switzerland).
Seventh generation
The seventh generation was released on May 28, 2019. What is new is the use of the Apple A10 Fusion , which, compared to the Apple A8 of its predecessor, should have twice as high processor performance and triple graphics performance, as well as a total of 2 GB of RAM. A variant with 256 GB is available for € 449. The two other variants of 32 and 128 GB have not changed in price. The logos for FCC and others on the back are omitted.
The iPod Touch is the only iPod that supports iOS 13 , which was presented at WWDC 2019 on June 3, 2019, just 6 days later .
System-on-a-chip
The system-on-a-chip (SoC) in the iPod touch is a Samsung S5L SoC up to and including the 5th generation . It has been officially advertised since the fourth generation and is called "Apple Ax". The internal name Samsung S5L has been retained. Previously, Apple barely disclosed any information about its devices. The term Apple Ax is colloquially incorrectly equated with the processor , but a SoC contains not only the processor but also all the other important components of a computer. Apple has been using the Apple A8 SoC manufactured by TSMC since the 6th generation .

operating system
The operating system of the iPod touch, the iOS , is the same as that used on the iPhone and iPad. When the iPhone was introduced, Steve Jobs only said that the iPhone uses Mac OS X , and from version 2.0 onwards, there was talk of iPhoneOS . From version 4.0 it was called iOS . As with the other devices, iOS is operated via a touch screen with multi-touch function. Application programs (so-called " apps ") are available from the App Store for the iPod touch . Basically, these are the same apps as the iPhone. However, certain applications that use non-existent hardware components such as GPS or telephone services are not available. A well-known example of an app that isn't available on iPod touch is WhatsApp . Before iOS 2.0 there were only web applications that had to be opened with the “ Safari ” browser . Apps that are to be published in the App Store are checked by Apple beforehand. Also, Apple can remove or disallow any app from the store. The installation of unauthorized apps is only possible through a jailbreak or a setting profile.
