3D touch

3D touch sensor in an iPhone 6s

3D Touch (also Force Touch ) is a technology for smartphones from the US company Apple for its iPhones , which was introduced into the product range with the iPhone 6s . It offers the user the option of performing three different functions by applying different levels of pressure to the touch-sensitive display . This is made possible by capacitive sensors that are located behind the display. These measure the distance to the surface of the display.

The pressure sensitivity can be individually adjusted for the user in the device settings.

The iPhone XR no longer has this technology. The iPhone XS (Max) is the youngest iPhone with 3D Touch. The iPhones 11 and 11 Pro (Max) presented by Apple on September 10, 2019 as part of a keynote speech use Haptic Touch , a type of simulated 3D touch that enables additional functions when pressed for a longer period of time, whereby the strength of the pressure no longer plays a role.

Areas of application

The detection of v. a. in system-related applications and setting dialogs. There are now many mobile apps that also support 3D Touch to enable more differentiated user control.
