Marek Safjan
Marek Henryk Safjan (born August 28, 1949 in Warsaw ) is a Polish lawyer, professor of law and a judge at the European Court of Justice since 2009 . Between 1998 and 2006 he was Chairman of the Constitutional Court in Poland .
Life
In 1971 he graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw , where Safjan was then employed. He was also a participant in a doctoral seminar led by Stanisław Ehrlich . He worked within a body of legal experts from Solidarność , which worked out reforms of the legal system between 1981 and 1992.
In 1980 he received the Doctor iuris and obtained his habilitation in 1990. In 1998 he was awarded the title of professor. Safjan specialized in general private law and medical law and is the author of over 200 academic papers. He also published regularly in Newsweek . He was also a member of the Helsinki Foundation Council for Human Rights.
Between 1996 and 1997 he was Vice Rector at the University of Warsaw. Member of the Collegium Invisibile (linked to the Collegium Nobilium ), chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Institute for Justice , representative of Poland in the Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe (1991–1997), corresponding member of the PAU and member of the "Committee for Ethics in Science" at the Polish Academy of Sciences .
In 1997 he was elected to the Constitutional Court and, as a result of his appointment by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski from January 1998 until his resignation on November 5, 2006, he held the office of President of the Court.
In January 2009 he was nominated as a judge at the European Court of Justice and replaced Jerzy Makarczyk on October 6, 2009 when he was sworn in. In April 2015, his term of office was extended for a further six years.

- Carrier of the order Polonia Restituta (Commander) , received in 2010
In 2004 Safjan received the Idzi Radziszewski Prize and two years later the Kisiel Prize. In 2007 he was awarded the Pro Merito Medal of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
