The presentation of the Emmy Awards 2004 took place on 19 September 2004 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles instead. This was the 56th award in the Primetime category .

The award ceremony was hosted by Garry Shandling and broadcast on the US television station ABC . The broadcaster with the most nominations (38) was Home Box Office and received 15 awards, followed by the National Broadcasting Company and USA Network with four awards each. The most successful series were Engel in America (11 nominations) with seven and The Sopranos (12) with four awards. Arrested Development and Practice proved to be the most “accurate” - the lawyers with three awards with only four nominations and the reality show The Amazing Race 4 with only one nomination with distinction.
