Pancho Villa - Mexican Outlaw (Original title: And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself) is an American biopic from 2003 . Bruce Beresford directed and Larry Gelbart wrote the screenplay .

action

Pancho Villa is confronted with two problems in his fight against the Mexican government : The newspapers of the US Hearst corporation report negatively about him and his troops are lacking weapons and ammunition. Therefore he offers the film producer DW Griffith to produce a film about his fight against the government. Griffith agrees and hires Frank Thayer to shoot the biopic The Life of General Villa .

Thayer is initially fascinated by Pancho Villa and experiences with him the cruelty of the fighting during the capture of Torreón in 1914. However, when he has to watch the brutality Villa is personally capable of, he leaves him with his team. Nevertheless, during his stay at Villa, he shot a much longer film than planned and can celebrate a big box-office success with it.

criticism

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was a "great revolutionary portrait with media criticism" that was "more than just a replacement" for the missing film about Pancho Villa.

Awards

Antonio Banderas was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2004. In the same year the film received an Emmy for sound editing; He was nominated in eight other categories, including Best TV Film, Best Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Actor (for Antonio Banderas).

In 2004 the film and Eion Bailey were nominated for a Golden Satellite Award ; Larry Gelbart also received the Writers Guild of America Award and Antonio Banderas the Image Foundation Award , which the film also received as best TV film.
