Stefan Boschkow ( Bulgarian Стефан Божков ; born September 20, 1923 in Sofia ; † February 1, 2014 ibid) was a Bulgarian football player and later coach and football official. After making 53 international matches as a player, Boschkow was also the coach of the Bulgarian national soccer team for a number of years and led them to take part in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico .

Player career

Stefan Boschkow began playing football at the district club Sportist Sofia, where he made his debut in the first team at the age of fifteen. There he played as a midfielder for eight years until he joined SK Kladno in 1946 . This Czechoslovak club had just been relegated from the country's top division due to match-fixing, but managed to return to the Czechoslovak football championship immediately with Stefan Boschkow in its ranks .

After the promotion with Kladno, Stefan Boschkow returned to his Bulgarian homeland and from then on played for the top club CSKA Sofia , where he had by far the most successful period of his career. With the Central Sports Club of the Army Sofia, Boschkow won ten championship titles over the years, and in 1948 he was also involved in the first championship ever in the club's history. In the period that followed, CSKA Sofia established a real dominance over Bulgarian football and even won nine championships in a row between 1954 and 1962. However, Stefan Boschkow only played for the club until 1960, before he announced the end of his active football career after 189 league games with 47 goals at the age of 37. In addition to the numerous championship titles, Boschkow was also very successful with CSKA Sofia in the national cup, then known as the Soviet Army Cup . You could win this competition three times in 1951, 1954 and 1955.

Between 1946 and 1958, Stefan Boschkow also made 53 international matches for the Bulgarian national soccer team. In these games he scored four goals. The highlight of his international career was winning the bronze medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne . There, Bulgaria presented very strong, failed after extra time of the semi-finals with 1: 2 at the clear favorite gone into the game Soviet Union and finally won against India with a sovereign 3: 0 win third place. However, Boschkow was not allowed to participate in a soccer world championship.

Coaching career

Just a few months after the end of his active career as a football player, Stefan Boschkow took over the coaching position of the Bulgarian national football team, succeeding Krum Milew , which he only looked after on an interim basis. After a few days, a successor was found for him, his name was Georgi Patschedschiew and led Bulgaria to qualify for the first time for a soccer World Cup , but in Chile in 1962 they clearly failed in the preliminary round.

After a six-year break as head coach, Stefan Boschkow took over again in 1966 for the Bulgarian national team, which in the same year had seen its second World Cup participation in a row under coach Rudolf Vytlačil . Boschkow continued Vytlačil's work and qualified with his team as the first in Group 8 in the European qualification before Poland for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico . Here the team around players like Christo Bonew , Dimitar Penew or Georgi Asparuchow failed, however, as in the two finals before in the preliminary round. This time they ranked third in a group with the Federal Republic of Germany , Peru and Morocco with only one point won against the North Africans. After the World Cup in 1970, Stefan Boschkows tenure as Bulgarian national coach ended, he was replaced by Wasil Spasow .

For Stefan Boschkow there were many years without a coaching activity. It was not until 1982 that he took over as coach of his old club CSKA Sofia for a short time . However, this activity was only interim, he was replaced again soon afterwards.

After that, Stefan Boschkow did not accept any further engagements as a trainer. To this end, he acted for a long time as vice-president of the Bulgarian Football Association and was involved in numerous commissions of the association. Boschkov died on February 1, 2014 at the age of 90 in Sofia.
