Graham Cyril Rix (born October 23, 1957 in Doncaster , South Yorkshire , England ) is a former English football player and current coach . After his last coaching position with the Scottish club Heart of Midlothian , Rix has been unemployed since March 22, 2006.

Career as a soccer player

Arsenal FC

Originally from Doncaster - located in the county of Yorkshire - Rix joined the youth division of Arsenal FC in 1974 and signed his first professional contract there two years later. On April 2, 1977, he made his debut for his club in the match against Leicester City and scored the first goal of the game. From then on, he played his way into the regular formation, replacing his rival George Armstrong on the left wing and formed a powerful duo in attacking midfield with Liam Brady , which played a decisive role in Arsenal reaching three FA Cup finals in a row between 1978 and 1980 . However, Arsenal could only win in 1979 when they defeated Manchester United 3-2 in the final . Rix gave it the cross to 3-2 by Alan Sunderland in the last minute of the game, with Manchester equalizing 2-2 just seconds earlier.

In 1980, Arsenal reached the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup against FC Valencia and went to a 0: 0 after extra time in the penalty shootout . There Rix missed his penalty and Arsenal lost. After Liam Brady moved to Juventus Turin , quite a few believed that Rix would also leave Arsenal. However, he stayed in London and was even promoted to team captain in 1983 . Since Arsenal was in a sporting crisis in the mid-1980s, Rix was unable to win another title.

Stations after the Arsenal period

A series of injuries to the Achilles tendon then ensured that from the mid-1980s onwards he had to take frequent breaks, which meant that he lost his regular place to Martin Hayes . He was loaned to Brentford FC in the late stages of his time at Arsenal before leaving the club in 1988 - after 51 goals in 464 games - to play in France for clubs SM Caen and AC Le Havre . In the four years Rix brought it to 100 first division appearances and nine hits; He was not granted any major successes there because he barely escaped relegation with Caen in the first two years and then did not jump out more than a midfield position twice. In 1992 he returned to Scotland for Dundee FC on the British Isles, where he ended his active football career in 1993 .

National team career

After the less successful European Championship in Italy in 1980 , in which the English national coach Ron Greenwood had renounced offensive wingers such as Peter Barnes or Laurie Cunningham for tactical reasons, Rix won a 4-0 win in Norway for the first time during a qualifier for the 1982 World Cup in Spain in the English national team . In the further course of the qualification phase, he completed another six internationals in the next 14 months and increasingly established himself on the left as a regular player, with only Tony Morley from Aston Villa was a competitor for his position, as Barnes and Cunningham increasingly poor prospects in the national team possessed. Steve Coppell was undisputed on the right wing and so it depended on Greenwood's tactical direction whether Rix was needed as an additional left winger. Despite only two appearances as a substitute in the immediate preparation for the World Cup finals, Rix should then come into play in all the tournament's games. This was mainly due to the fact that the tactical requirement with two attacking wingers in midfield worked well in England's 3-1 opening win against France , especially since he formed a well-rehearsed duo on the left with his team-mate from Arsenal and left full-back Kenny Sansom .

After the World Cup, Rix was initially also under the new coach Bobby Robson in the team and completed two international matches against Denmark and Germany . Since his form and that of his club from then on deteriorated significantly and John Barnes offered a very promising talent as an alternative to Rix's position, he was only called up to the national team very sporadically and came in 1984 to his 17th and last international match.

Coaching career

Chelsea FC

After Rix had already worked as a coach in Dundee, he joined Chelsea as a youth coach in the summer of 1993 . During a wave of injuries in the Chelsea squad, he was later recalled to the squad on short notice and even played in the Premier League against his old Arsenal club in May 1995 . Just one year later he was Kotrainer under new coach Ruud Gullit and worked in the same role under Gullit's successor Gianluca Vialli , with whom he 1997 FA Cup and the League Cup , and in 1998 won the European Cup Winners' Cup.

In March 1999 , Rix was sentenced to one year in prison for sexually engaging a minor . After serving six months in prison, he continued his work in Chelsea and won the FA Cup again in 2000 before leaving the club after Ken Bates sacked Vialli .

Portsmouth and Oxford

Rix trained interlocutory 2001 and 2002 to Portsmouth and then by Harry Redknapp replaced. In 2004 he was in charge of fourth division Oxford United for seven months , but he dropped it from what was initially believed to be a direct promotion place to ninth place and thus even missed qualifying for the play-off matches . When Oxford's performance did not improve at the beginning of the 2004/05 season , he was given a leave of absence from the club's management.

Heart of Midlothian

On November 7th, 2005 the signing of Rix by the Scottish Premier League club Heart of Midlothian was announced, whereby he should take over the pure coaching activity and another sporting director should be hired for the purchase of new players (in contrast to the conventional coaching profile in Great Britain the coach is usually referred to as the "manager", who is responsible for handling player transfers in addition to looking after the team).

In February 2006, however, Rix expressed very dissatisfied with the cooperation with the owner Vladimir Nikolajewitsch Romanov and complained that this had an impact on the sporting interests of the team. Just a month later, he was dismissed by Roman Nikolayevich Romanov - son of Vladimir Romanov and president of the association - on the official grounds that they were not satisfied with the results achieved.
