Player career

Arsenal FC (1966–1981)

The previously active in the reserve team Sammy Nelson made his debut on October 25, 1969 at the age of 20 years for Arsenal FC in the Football League First Division 1969/70 . A year later , Nelson, who was only used in four games, won the English championship with his team. When he won the title (2-1 against Liverpool) in the 1970/71 FA Cup , coach Bertie Mee did not nominate him for the squad for the final game. In the 1971/72 European Cup , the team failed in the quarter-finals at the Dutch champions and eventual title winners Ajax Amsterdam (1: 2 and 0: 1). After he had benefited from the injury of Bob McNab , who was set on the left defender in 1971/72 , his playing times were reduced again a year later. Only after McNab left Arsenal in 1975 after nine years, Sammy Nelson (36 league games) established himself as a regular player in the Football League First Division 1975/76 . In the 1978/79 FA Cup , Arsenal won the title by beating Manchester United 3-2 in the final. After he had remained in the title win eight years before without use, Nelson was used by new coach Terry Neill in this game. The club was also successful in the 1979/80 European Cup Winners' Cup , narrowly missing out on winning the title after losing 4-5 on penalties in the final against Valencia CF. As early as 1978 he had stood with his teammates Pat Jennings , David O'Leary and Pat Rice in the final of the prestigious FA Cup , but lost the game 1-0 to Ipswich Town . In 1980, the team succeeded in the 61st minute substitute Nelson, the third entry in a row in the final of the FA Cup 1979/80 (0: 1 against West Ham United). The Football League First Division 1979/80 he finished with Arsenal in fourth place in the table and scored two goals in 35 league games. After signing England international Kenny Sansom in the summer of 1980, Sammy Nelson lost his regular position as a left defender and left the club a year later in September 1981.

He spent his last two seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion . 1982/83 he rose with his new team as bottom of the table in the second division. Brighton surprisingly reached the final of the FA Cup 1982/83 in the same season , but lost to Manchester United without the unused Nelson.

Northern Ireland National Team (1970-1982)

Sammy Nelson made his debut on April 21, 1970 for the Northern Irish national team in a 3-1 defeat in England. In 1982 he was nominated by national coach Billy Bingham in the Northern Irish World Cup squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain and played the last group game (1-0 against Spain). After the surprising group win against hosts Spain, he was also used in the first group game of the intermediate round, but was eliminated from the tournament with Northern Ireland after a 2-2 defeat against Austria and a 4-1 defeat against France.
