Hospital de San José y la Caridad

The Hospital de San José y la Caridad is a hospital in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .
The building, constructed in several stages, is located in Ciudad Vieja at 25 de Mayo, Washington, Guaraní and Francisco Maciel ( Manzana 15 ).
José Toribio was responsible for the first construction phase in 1825 . Further construction phases date from the years 1859, 1879 and 1889. The extension on Calle Guaraní goes back to the architect Bernardo Poncini , Eduardo Canstatt carried out a reconstruction of this section . Julián Mazquelez was responsible for the expansion on Maciel and Washington streets .
Today the Maciel Hospital is housed in the building. The ten meter high, three-story building has a floor area of 6,626 m². The building encloses the Capilla de la Caridad, which serves as a hospital chapel .
Since 1975 the building has been classified as the Monumento Histórico Nacional . In the 1980s, extensions to the Maciel Hospital on Calle Washington on the opposite Manzana 10 are not included.
