Patrick James "Pat" Rice MBE (born March 17, 1949 in Belfast ) is a former Northern Irish football player and football coach .

life and career

Player career

After completing an apprenticeship as a greengrocer on Gillespie Road in London , Rice began a playing career at Arsenal FC . In 1964, the right-back joined Arsenal as a youth player. He made his competitive debut for the Gunners on December 5, 1967 against Burnley FC in the League Cup. The robust player was the captain of Arsenal FC for much of the 1970s. In his 16 years with the first team, Rice won the English championship once and played in five FA Cup finals , two of which he won. He was also able to bring the 1970 UEFA Cup to England with Arsenal FC . In 1980 he moved to Watford FC to end his career . With Watford he rose to the top English league. In 1984 Pat Rice ended his playing career. Internationally, he made 49 caps for Northern Ireland .

Coaching career

In 1984, after his playing career, Rice returned to Arsenal . The Northern Irish coach of a youth team of the Gunners. He could win the FA Youth Cup twice . In September 1996 he was a short-term first-team coach after previous coaches Stewart Houston and Bruce Rioch resigned. Rice won all three league games he spent on the bench and one UEFA Cup game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . After Arsène Wenger took over the reign of the Gunners, he became the Frenchman's assistant . As an assistant coach, Rice won the English Cup four times, the English championship three times and the Community Shield twice . He is one of the few footballers or coaches who have won all three doubles so far with Arsenal.
