Ricardo Penella Arias (born February 25, 1957 in Catarroja ) is a former Spanish football player who played as a libero . He appeared in 501 competitive games for Valencia CF and won three major titles with the club, including the 1980 European Cup Winners' Cup . In La Liga , he played 377 games and scored twice. In the list of record players of the Valencians he occupies second place behind Fernando Gómez Colomer .

Career

Arias spent 16 of his 17 professional seasons, including 15 in La Liga, at Valencia CF. He made his La Liga debut on November 7, 1976 as a late substitute in a 3-1 home win against CD Málaga and scored his first goal on March 5 1978 in a 3-0 win against Sevilla FC in the Mestalla Stadium . He won the Copa del Rey 1978/79 with the club . After that, he contributed eight games and one goal to the team's victory in the Cup Winners' Cup next year and converted a penalty in the final in a penalty shoot-out to the decisive 5-4 against Arsenal FC in Brussels .

For many seasons Arias was a regular player and an important pillar on the defensive. In 1985 he rose with the club from the Premiera division. The following year he was able to secure direct promotion with Valencia.

After only 16 appearances in the 1991/1992 season for Valencia, the then 35-year-old Arias signed with the neighboring CD Castellón in 1992 in the Segunda División and ended his career at the end of the season.

After the career

In November 2014, Arias stated in an interview that he was bankrupt and getting by with odd jobs. Shortly afterwards, the father of four returned to Valencia to work in the club's social department.
