Athletic career

Club career

From the age of six to 16, Ludwig Kögl was active as a footballer for his hometown club FC Penzberg before he moved to TSV 1860 Munich's A-youth team via SpVgg Starnberg . Kögl only stayed with the Munich Lions for a year, but was already used in the adult division. By the summer of 1984 he had played twelve games in what was then the third-rate Bayern League , scoring two goals. Local rivals FC Bayern Munich also noticed the talented midfielder and manager Uli Hoeneß signed Kögl in the summer of 1984.

Kögl made his Bundesliga debut on August 25, 1984 (1st matchday) in a 3-1 away win over Arminia Bielefeld when he came on for Michael Rummenigge in the 61st minute . He scored his first goal on May 21, 1985 (32nd matchday) when FC Bayern Munich won 4-0 goals at Karlsruher SC . Furthermore, he came to six national and 33 international cup games (5 goals); the victory in the final of the European Cup of National Champions in 1987 was denied him and his teammates by the 1: 2 defeat in the Vienna Prater Stadium against FC Porto . The Algerian Rabah Madjer made up for his head- opening goal with a remarkable heel hit before Juary Filho scored the winning goal in the 80th minute.

In 1985 , 1986 , 1987 , 1989 and 1990 he won the German soccer championship with Bayern and in 1986 the DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart with 5-2 goals. A year earlier, Bayern lost 2-1 to Bayer 05 Uerdingen in the same place .

After moving to VfB Stuttgart in 1990, he won his sixth and final championship title two years later ; due to the 2-1 away win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the last match day of the 1991/92 season, for which he gave the template that Guido Buchwald used four minutes before the end of the game. Internationally, Kögl was active three times for VfB in the first round of the Champions League , in which the club was only eliminated in the play-off against Leeds United . In the DFB Cup he was used five times and he scored one goal.

From 1996 to 1999 Kögl played 94 times in the National League A for FC Luzern , scored 13 goals and was twice in the European Cup Winners' Cup , in which the Swiss were eliminated in the first round against Slavia Prague . After returning to his homeland in 1999 , he was under contract for two seasons with the Munich suburb and Bundesliga club SpVgg Unterhaching until the end of his career in 2001 . Kögl played his last of 40 games on December 15, 2000 (18th matchday) in a 2-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt . He was substituted on for Altin Rraklli five minutes before the end of the game .

National team

On January 5, 1984 Kögl made his debut in the U-18 national team , with which he defeated France 2-0 in Leningrad. A day later, he scored his first goal in the national jersey in a 7-0 win over Belgium (also in Leningrad; at the Granatkin memorial tournament). He played his last of six games in this national team on April 10, 1984 in Kufstein in a 1-0 victory over Austria.

For the U-21 national team he played 16 times between 1984 and 1987, the first time on October 16, 1984 in Münster in the 1-0 victory over Sweden , and last time on December 2, 1987 in Sofia in the 1: 2 defeat against Bulgaria .

Kögl's debut in the senior national team took place in Mexico: On June 15, 1985, the hosts lost 2-0 in a friendly in a friendly. His second appearance - on November 17, 1985 in a World Cup qualifying match against ČSSR (2-2 in Munich ) - was his last.
