Calculating machine by Jacob Auch, around 1790, Baden-Württemberg State Museum, Stuttgart

Also, the son of a baker, was an apprentice to the famous instrument maker, watchmaker and pastor Philipp Matthäus Hahn in Echterdingen and worked in his workshop. In 1787 he set up his own workshop in Vaihingen an der Enz . During this time he built instruments (and restored works of art) for the professor of physics and mathematics in Karlsruhe, Johann Lorenz Boeckmann . In 1798 he became court watchmaker and court mechanic for the Duke of Weimar . There he built instruments for the astronomer Franz Xaver von Zach at the Seeberg observatory . He also built a telescope and other equipment for Goethe .

He wrote two books on the art of watchmaking.

In addition to clocks (including astronomical pocket watches based on the Hahn model), he also built calculating machines. In 1790 he built adding machines in Vaihingen, two of which have survived ( Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon in Dresden, Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart). The machine in Stuttgart has eight hands and is designed for arithmetic with cruisers and guilders. The machines are probably inspired by his time at Hahn, but follow a completely different design. A replica is in the Arithmeum in Bonn.

In 1787 he married Eva Maria Wintermantel in Vaihingen.
